Biography of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan

During the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack, when not knowing how many brave soldiers were martyred while saving the lives of the people. One of them was Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was leading a team of NSG commandos at that time. Who was entrusted with the task of freeing the people held hostage in the Taj. Which he did very well. But could not save his life and became martyr. Today we will tell you about his martyrdom and some moments of his life.

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was an Indian Army officer who lost his life in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks. He was leading a team of NSG commandos who were tasked to rescue the hostages from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. He was one of those heroes who saved everyone from 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

  • Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was born on 15 March 1977 into a Malayali Nair family, who had moved from Cheruvannur in Kozhikode district of Kerala to Bangalore several years ago where he spent 14 years.
  • He belonged to an educated family. His father’s name is K. Unnikrishnan who worked as an officer in ISRO and his mother’s name was Dhanalakshmi Unnikrishnan who was a housewife. Sandeep was the only child in his family.

Indian Army Career of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan –

  • On 12 July 1999, Major Sandeep was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 7th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment (Infantry) and was stationed at various places in Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan when there were frequent terror attacks. 
  • Sandeep was promoted to the rank of Captain on 12 June 2003 and to the rank of Major on 12 June 2005. In 2006, Sandeep Unnikrishnan decided to join the National Security Guard (NSG), and after completing the training, he became a part of it.
  • Major Unnikrishnan topped the ‘lethal course’ (at the Commando Wing (Infantry School), Belgaum) which is said to be the toughest course in the army and earned “instructor grading” and accolades. 

Operation Vijay of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan – Year 1999

  • Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan participated in Operation Vijay in July 1999 when Pakistani forces entered Indian territory and the Kargil War took place. 
  • The Major was deployed on forward posts to counter heavy artillery firing and small arms fire by Pakistani troops. 
  • On the evening of December 31, 1999, Major Unnikrishnan led a team of six soldiers forward and managed to establish a post 200 meters from the opposing side against heavy resistance and shelling by Pakistani forces. 

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s Operation Parakram – from 2001 to 2002

  • Major Sandeep was also a part of Operation Parakram after the 1999 Kargil War. This was the second major military standoff between India and Pakistan. 
  • The Indian Army began responding to the terrorist attack of 13 December 2001 on the Parliament of India and the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on 1 October 2001. 
  • India claimed that two Pakistan-based terrorist groups fighting in Indian-administered Kashmir i.e. Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed were behind these attacks. 
  • Well, due to calls for international diplomacy and sanctions, on 20 December, from the United States, Russia and the United Nations, India mobilized and deployed its troops in Kashmir and Indian Punjab. 
  • This was India’s largest military mobilization since the 1971 conflict and India’s codename for mobilization was Operation Parakram. 
  • Apart from these, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was also involved in various battles/wars including Operation Rakshak and Counter-Insurgency. 

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s Operation Black  Tornado

  • On the night of 26 November 2008, panic spread in the city of dreams and many prominent buildings including the 100-year-old Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in South Mumbai were attacked by terrorists.
  • One of the main terrorists behind this was a Pakistani terrorist and a member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba Islamic terrorist organization Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab. Who was later hanged on 21 November 2012 in Pune. 
  • Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was the team commander of the 51 Special Action Group (51 SAG), which was deployed in the operation at the Taj Hotel to rescue the hostages. Taking the operation forward, Major Sandeep reached the sixth floor of the building with 10 commandos from the stairs. 
  • While getting back, the team of commandos suspected hostages on the third floor and some women were taken hostage in a locked room from inside.
  • The team entered the room by breaking the door and faced firing from the terrorists. Commando Sunil Yadav, who was an aide of Major Unnikrishnan, was injured during the firing. Major Unnikrishnan engaged the terrorists in the gunfight and arranged for the evacuation of commando Yadav.  
  • After a face-off with the terrorist, Major Unnikrishnan chased the terrorists who had fled to the second floor of the hotel. 
  • During the same encounter, he was shot from behind and was seriously injured. His injury became fatal and Major breathed his last. 
  • According to NSG officials, “Don’t come up, I’ll handle them,” were Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s last words. Their sacrifice, bravery, courage and leadership inspired their comrades to destroy all the terrorists and the team successfully completed Operation Balk Tornado. However, the country lost its brave soldier. 

The last immortal words of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan –

When Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was laying siege to the terrorists with Commando Sunil Yadav, Sandeep arranged for the evacuation of his colleague Sunil Kumar Yadav, and he decided to go after the terrorists alone. 

On the spot of the terrorists, Sandeep reached the second floor of the hotel where he was thrown out of the grip and was shot in the back. He lost his life due to loss of blood due to multiple injuries and bullet wounds. According to NSG officials, his last words were-

Don’t come up, I’ll handle them.”

Honor of Ashoka Chakra 

On January 26, 2009, President of India Pratibha Patil honored martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan with the country’s highest peace time gallantry award “Ashok Chakra” for his outstanding courage, unshakable fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice. His mother got the respect of her son on Republic Day.

  • Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan led the commando operation launched on 27 November 2008 to flush out terrorists from Hotel Taj Mahal in Mumbai, in which he rescued 14 hostages.
  • During the operation, there was fierce firing on his team, in which a member of his team was seriously injured. Major Sandeep killed the terrorists while firing accurately and rescued the injured commandos. In this sequence, he got shot in his right hand. Despite being injured, he kept fighting the terrorists till his last breath.

Funeral crowd gathered outside his Bangalore residence to perform the last rites of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. Mourners raised slogans like “Sandeep Unnikrishnan is immortal”, “Long live Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan”. 

His last rites were performed with full military honours. For his supreme sacrifice, Unnikrishnan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on 26 January 2009.

  • After her death, the 4.5 km road between Federal-Mogul and MS Palya Junction on Doddaballapur Road was renamed as Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road, formerly known as Mother Dairy Double Road in Bangalore. 
  • In November 2012, a bust of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was installed at the Ramamurthy Nagar Outer Ring Road Junction in Bengaluru. Later, his statue was also installed at the entrance of the Indian Education Society at Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road in Mumbai. However, in September 2018, the statue was destroyed in Bengaluru after a mini-truck lost control and crashed into the structure.

  • In 2020, Sony Pictures Entertainment entered into two titles titled ‘Major’ and ‘Major Sandeep’ with the producers’ association to make a biopic on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. 
  • The film was produced by actor Mahesh Babu, and actor Adivasi Shesha played the lead role of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in the film. The film was scheduled to release on 2 July 2021 but due to Corona’s illness, the film will now be released on 27 May 2022.
  • Mahesh Babu released the poster and date on social media and declared July 2 as Major Day. 
  • Before principal photography began, the film’s cast met with Sandeep’s parents to convince them that the crew was planning to make a film in their son’s honor.
